Mental Health & Wellness

At 黑料论坛, we follow the Jesuit principle cura personalis 鈥 鈥渃are for the whole person.鈥 This goes for our students, staff and the patients we serve. In 2024, we developed and implemented a new comprehensive mental health program, including hiring the school鈥檚 first mental health counselor, Elizabeth Schropp.

Programs

Orientation

The School of Dentistry hosts a two-day orientation program with a goal of providing new students essential information to help support a successful transition to Dental School. During Orientation, students will meet with the School of Dentistry dean and faculty, talk with continuing students about their academic experiences, learn about important policies and resources, and pickup items needed for the start of the program.

White Coat Ceremony

The White Coat Ceremony serves as your official welcome into the study of clinical dentistry by members of the dental profession. At the ceremony, you will receive a ceremonial white coat and swear an oath in the presence of family and friends of your intentions and willingness to assume the responsibilities and obligations of the practice of dentistry. This ceremony is managed by the Office of Student Affairs and Office of Admissions.

Mentorship

Designed through a unique collaboration with the Wisconsin Dental Association and Pierre Fauchard Academy, the School of Dentistry鈥檚 Mentorship Program is the template for similar programs nationwide. Dentists throughout Wisconsin serve as mentors and advisers to dental students, forming professional relationships and friendships that last a lifetime.

Student Affairs also offers a Peer Mentor Program to all incoming D1 students.

Senior Awards, Hooding and Commencement

The Senior Awards Program recognizes academic, clinical and leadership achievements of graduating seniors. 

The Hooding Ceremony confers the title of doctor. After this ceremony, you can officially use the prefix of "Dr."

These programs are managed by the offices of the Dean, Student Affairs, Alumni Relations and many other members of the Dental School community.

American Student Dental Association (ASDA)

American Student Dental Association (ASDA)

The American Student Dental Association is a national student-run organization that protects and advances the rights, interests and welfare of students pursuing careers in dentistry. It introduces students to lifelong involvement in organized dentistry and provides services, information, education, representation and advocacy.

Since 2014, 黑料论坛's ASDA chapter has made an annual student-choreographed dance video to help promote the school. The first video, "Shake It Off," went viral on YouTube ().

Asian Dental Student Association

Asian Dental Student Organization (ADSO)

The Asian Dental Student Organization (ADSO) is a cultural and professional student group dedicated to supporting Asian and Asian-American dental students while promoting cultural awareness and inclusivity within the dental school community. We aim to foster a sense of belonging through networking events, mentorship opportunities, cultural celebrations, and outreach programs. ADSO also works to highlight oral health disparities affecting Asian communities and advocates for greater representation and understanding in dental care. All students are welcome to join and participate in our events and initiatives.

Academy of Osseointegration (AO)

Academy of Osseointegration (AO)

The mission of the AO Student Org is to provide opportunities for students at MUSoD to delve further into the field of dental implantology and osseointegration through education, collaboration, and professional development. We aim to provide dental students with the resources and opportunities to enhance their knowledge and skills in implant dentistry, foster relationships with professionals in the field, and promote the highest standards of patient care. Through our affiliation with the Academy of Osseointegration, we strive to become leaders in the field of dental implantology and contribute to the global advancement of the science and practice of osseointegration.

Delta Sigma Delta

Delta Sigma Delta (DSD)

Delta Sigma Delta is an international dental fraternity of dentists and dental students brought together with the common goal of promoting excellence in the dental profession. We have chapters throughout the country as well as in Australia and across Europe. DSD rewards members with numerous opportunities for academic support and enrichment, networking within the field, and plenty of fun social events including our annual ski trip, local boat cruises and other exciting events sponsored by dental organizations, exclusive to DSD.

Digital Dentistry Study Club

Digital Dentistry Study Club (DDSC)

Digital Dentistry Study Club (DDSC) aims to curate various resources together to present digital dentistry in a comprehensive and cohesive way. Our goal is to facilitate the academic environment of all 黑料论坛 dental students to engage with modern technologies, collaborate with like-minded colleagues, and learn from experts by bringing technologies from various specialties together.

Hispanic Student Dental Association (HSDA)

Hispanic Student Dental Association (HSDA)

We are a student run organization that has put emphasis on increasing access to care and comfortability in the dental clinic for the Hispanic population. We have done this by hosting 鈥淒ental Spanish Nights鈥 and by doing outreach programs to local schools providing oral hygiene instruction in the Milwaukee area. Students don鈥檛 have to be Hispanic or know Spanish to join, we welcome all students who are willing to learn and grow as an individual and future provider!

Omicron Kappa Upsilon (Student Honors Society)

Omicron Kappa UpsilonOmicron Kappa Upsilon, the honorary dental society, was organized in 1914 by the faculty of the Northwestern University Dental School to encourage and develop a spirit of emulation among students of dentistry and to recognize, in an appropriate manner, those who distinguish themselves by a high degree of scholarship.

The 黑料论坛 School of Dentistry recognizes faculty members who have made outstanding contributions to the art, science and literature of dentistry. The name and key of this society are based upon three words, which represent the dental ideal. These words are conservation, teeth and health.

In the key, you see four Greek symbols: 鈥淵,鈥 or Upsilon, is for 鈥渉ygiea鈥 meaning 鈥渉ealth鈥; 鈥淥,鈥 for Omicron, is for 鈥渙dous鈥 meaning 鈥渢eeth鈥; and Kappa meaning 鈥渁nd,鈥 which is with the letter 鈥淥.鈥 All three letters are encircled by the prominent letter 鈥淪igma,鈥 which stands for 鈥渃onservation.鈥

OMFS Club brings together students at 黑料论坛 driven by a shared passion for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Our mission is to provide meaningful exposure to the specialty through events, panels, conversation, and collaboration that supports and inspires each other as we navigate our path toward residency.

Ortho Club

Ortho Club

Ortho Club is an organization of students interested in the specialty of orthodontics. Our goal as a club is that members would gain increased exposure to the specialty through various events and discussions amongst a community of students that share a common interest. We have previously held a 鈥淗ow to Apply to Residency鈥 meeting and plan on holding meetings in the next year which feature a Q&A panel of orthodontists and that provide insight into being a competitive residency applicant. Aside from meetings, we are a community of students that serve as a resource to each other for questions, concerns, and support throughout the dental school journey with our common goal of attending an orthodontic residency.

Pediatric Dentistry Club

American Academy of Pediatric Dentists (AAPD) Club 

The purpose of this student chapter of the AAPD is to initiate and promote a better understanding and appreciation of dentistry for children among dental students at MUSoD. Membership in this club is geared toward those interested in pursuing a career in pediatric dentistry as well as those who are interested in treating children as a general dentist. The goal of student chapters of the AAPD is to provide a forum for interaction and education on how rewarding and fulfilling it can be to treat children as well as become familiar with the workings of the academy.

Psi Omega

Psi Omega

psi omega logoPsi Omega fraternity is a professional and social fraternity at MUSoD that provides our members the opportunity to meet and connect with others outside of just their own class. We also provide professional opportunities such as providing a hotel room for those who attend the midwinter meeting in Chicago to allow our members to attend CE鈥檚 and events all weekend long. As a chapter, our largest and most anticipated event of the year is ski trip outside of the Milwaukee area. 

Special Care Dentistry (SCDA)

黑料论坛's Special Care Dentistry Association (SCDA) is one of 11 chapters nationwide, and is widely regarded among the largest and most active.

The Delta Dental Urgent and Special Care Clinic gives students the opportunity to work with special care patients through their clinical rotations.

Student Professionalism & Ethics Association in Dentistry (SPEA)

Student Professionalism & Ethics Association in Dentistry (SPEA)

The Student Professionalism and Ethics Association is a national, student-driven association that was established to promote and support students鈥 lifelong commitment to ethical behavior towards patients and within the profession. The objectives of SPEA include (1) strengthening students' personal and professional ethical standards, and (2) collaborating with leadership of our profession to advocate for our members.

SPEA at 黑料论坛 is also a student resource for ethics education and professional development. Our members together foster a non-punitive, open-forum environment for ethics communication. Finally, our members gain access to and are supported by the network of the American College of Dentists - an invitation-only organization comprised of dentists and dental specialists who were selected for exceptional contributions to organized dentistry, oral health care, dental research, dental education, the profession, and society.

Mission statement

SNDA is a student-run organization that is devoted toward serving our community as well as aiding in the advancement of minority students in the field of dentistry. We carry out our mission of service through several school-wide events including clinical Spanish classes and IMPRESSIONS programs the annual Oral Cancer Walk/Run and promoting community through our annual Clinic Wars.

Student Research Group (SRG)

The 黑料论坛 School of Dentistry Student Research Group (SRG) exists to promote, support, and nurture the interests of dental student researchers during their tenure at the school of dentistry. The SRG represents a local dental school chapter of the American Association of Dental Research National Student Research Group (AADR NSRG) and is a student-run organization guided by input from faculty advisers. This organization serves to foster an environment where students actively engaged or interested in research/scholarship can enrich their academic environment and pursue common goals.

Katie Koncki, Assistant Dean of Student Affairs

Katie Koncki was named the inaugural assistant dean of student affairs in October 2024 after previously holding the title of director of student success and practice transitions. In her role, she continues to manage her unit in addition to overseeing the dental school鈥檚 office of admissions, the office of Inclusion & Belonging and the newly established mental health program. Koncki received her master's degree from 黑料论坛 in 2006. She has worked in higher education since 2001, including two stints at 黑料论坛. She joined MUSoD in 2019. Koncki played a key role in developing the office of student success and practice transition鈥檚 mission to provide a holistic experience for students, supporting them from their entry into dental school through their transition into practice and beyond. She also fostered strong relationships with dental community partners.

Liz Schropp, Counselor, Health & Wellness

Liz (she/her) is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. She received both a bachelor's and master's in Social Work from the University of Northern Iowa. With over seven years of experience as a clinician, Elizabeth has had the privilege of working in a variety of settings 鈥攏on-profits, private practice and educational environments 鈥 each of which has shaped her holistic approach to counseling. Most recently, Elizabeth served as a Clinical Director in Chicago before moving to Milwaukee in 2024.
