Policy Statement

At ºÚÁÏÂÛ̳, our Catholic, Jesuit mission calls us to live as people for and with others. Hazing has no place in our community. Any act that demeans, endangers, or compromises the dignity and well-being of another student conflicts with our values of respect, responsibility, and cura personalis (care for the whole person). As such, Hazing, in all of its forms, is strictly prohibited.

Hazing – Definition

Federal Definition (Stop Campus Hazing Act)

In accordance with the Stop Campus Hazing Act, hazing is defined as:

Any intentional, knowing, or reckless act committed by a person, whether individually or in concert with others, against another person or persons—regardless of willingness to participate—that occurs in the course of initiation into, affiliation with, or maintenance of membership in a student organization, and that causes or creates a risk, above the reasonable risk encountered in the course of participation in the institution of higher education or the organization (such as the physical preparation necessary for participation in an athletic team), of physical or psychological injury.

Examples of hazing under federal law include, but are not limited to:

  • Whipping, beating, striking, or branding,

  • Sleep deprivation, confinement, or exposure to the elements,

  • Extreme or prolonged physical exertion,

  • Activities causing reasonable fear of physical harm through threats or conduct,

  • Causing, coercing, or otherwise inducing another person to consume food, liquid, alcohol, drugs, or other substances,

  • Causing, coercing, or otherwise inducing another person to perform sexual acts,

  • Any activity that places another person in reasonable fear of bodily harm through the use of threatening words or conduct,

  • Activities that violate federal, state, Tribal, or local law.

Consent is never a defense to hazing
