Special Education Grades K-12 Certificate Program

ºÚÁÏÂÛ̳’s new cross-categorical Special Education Grades K-12 Certificate program fits with the university's Catholic, Jesuit mission to prepare men and women with and for others. This program is open to educators from public or private schools with a current (or eligible) Tier-II educator license in Wisconsin and was designed to provide multiple classroom opportunities and clinical experiences aligned with the Standards for Special Education (Council for Exceptional Children), which address a broad range of student needs.

This certificate program will lead to licensure for special education teachers able to: 

  • Understand and address each student’s developmental and learning needs.
  • Demonstrate subject matter content knowledge and specialized curricular knowledge.
  • Use assessment to understand the learner and learning environment for data-based decision making.
  • Facilitate learning by using effective instruction.
  • Support social, emotional, and behavioral growth.
  • Collaborate with team members. Expand access to Catholic education to underserved populations. 

Scholarship Opportunity

ºÚÁÏÂÛ̳ students in this certificate program may be eligible for two significant scholarship opportunities: Catholic Schools Personnel Scholarship or the Milwaukee Area Teachers Scholarship.

 

COURSE REQUIREMENTS

Students interested in this program must be licensed teachers who hold a Tier II, III, or IV teacher license in Wisconsin. To apply, all necessary application materials required by the Graduate School can be submitted via the .

It is preferred that students start in the summer term, but fall and spring terms can be accommodated. Summer courses are offered online, and fall and spring courses are offered in-person.

Educator preparation programs are required to meet the requirement to provide instruction in science-based early literacy instruction as defined in Act 20 in order to endorse candidates for licensure beginning July 1, 2025.

To be eligible for admission to the Graduate School at ºÚÁÏÂÛ̳, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • A bachelor's from a regionally accredited institution or international equivalent must be completed prior to starting graduate school.
  • A minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.00 on a 4.00 scale.
  • Demonstrated English proficiency for non-U.S. citizens.
  • A current (or eligible) Tier-II educator license in Wisconsin

Application Requirements

1Upon admission, final official transcripts from all previously attended colleges/universities, with certified English translations if original language is not English, must be submitted to the Graduate School within the first five weeks of the term of admission or a hold preventing registration for future terms will be placed on the student’s record.

March 31: priority deadline for summer admission (typical program start). Applications are accepted on a rolling basis after the priority deadline

Merit-based aid (graduate assistantships/fellowships) is available. Private scholarships may also be available. U.S. citizens and permanent residents may be eligible to apply for need-based federal aid (loans) to help fund their educational expenses as well.
