Curriculum Vitae

Associate Professor of Practice - Accounting

黑料论坛 Accounting students balance debits/credits, work/life, and personal/professional excellence.  My teaching is enriched by my students, especially those that embrace professional education grounded in the liberal arts.  For example, a former student noted how executive summaries and contemporary poetry are similar in that they both value precise language.  Another likened a heat map of financial metrics to impressionist art.  A musician explained how she learned accounting just as she learned piano 鈥 through practice and repetition.  As you might expect from an even-handed accountant, I do my best to balance teaching/learning along with my students.

Professional Interests

The development of sound technical and problem-solving skills are essential characteristics of a quality business education, but they are not entirely sufficient ones.  As such, my secondary objective is to broaden the perspective of my students.  My research interests help to achieve this goal.  These interests include:

Quantitative Literacy: The ability to "crunch the numbers" is a foundational skill in the accounting profession.  Students can differentiate themselves in the classroom (and the workplace) by also telling the story that underlies the numbers.  I routinely research, design, and evaluate activities in which students are required to communicate the value they derive from quantitative information.

Fun and Games: Gamification is a technique that enlivens the classroom experience using game mechanics in a non-game context, such as an Accounting class.  I frequently use game-based learning activities in which the students are 鈥減layers鈥 engaged in problem solving, analysis, and communication exercises.  I continue to research game-based learning activities that promote classroom attendance, participation, retention, and performance.

The End Game: The selective use of gamification is helpful over the course of a long semester; however, I always keep the 鈥渆nd game鈥 front of mind.  As I plan each course, I research the ultimate learning outcome.  What should the student be able to accomplish by the end of the semester?  How do I help them get there?  Regular updates and interviews with our alumni help set the standard for our students.
